Each water harvest requires we row out to find the best salt blooms off the coast of Marblehead.

Our salt is made according to a 1,600-year-old process perfected by monks of Mount Athos, yet prepared using local sea water from the Marblehead coast North of Boston.

We are one of the few salterns on the East Coast of the United States and the only one that uses ancient, monastic saltern methods.

Unlike mass produced salts, ours benefit from a seasonality and vintage that can only occur with small batch salts. Autumn, winter, spring and summer salts are unique in that they have distinct algal, current and saline bloom signatures.

We can also vary the minerality and the salinity within a certain tolerance for our more demanding customers providing a bespoke saline experience.

You may also notice the live taste quality and delicate crystalline structure of our fresh salt that melts right on contact. Because of the freshness of our salt, you can also use less of it which makes it perfect for those looking to cut down on their salt consumption.

Understanding Salt: The Taste of the Sea

Understanding Salt: The Taste of the Sea

As one of only a few craft salterns in North America, and the only Kosher craft saltern, the Marblehead Salt Company hand harvests and prepares superior artisan sea salts according to a 1,600 year-old process perfected by the monks of Mount Athos.
Our salt is harvested directly from the best salt blooms in the North Atlantic -- found only off the coast of Marblehead, Massachusetts.  We not only harvest our salt from the Marblehead Coast, but we blend the waters for the right mineral signature and de-water it right here in Marblehead, Massachusetts in the first saltern built North of Boston in over 100 years.  The result is a collection of exceptional gourmet salts infused with seasonal flavors and vintage accents that can only be achieved through small batch salt production.  And because the Marblehead Salt Co. invested in building its own saltern, we can assure you of the highest quality from start to finish -- which is why we are also designated as Kosher by the local Orthodox rabbi of Chabad Lubavitch of the North Shore.  Rabbi Yossi Lipsker lives just a little over two miles away.  I like hanging out with Rabbi Yossi because when he's around I'm not the only guy in the room with a beard.
Salt is seasonal!  Our Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter salts demonstrate different tasting notes along a "floral scale" because of the amount of beneficial local phytoplankton and algae which changes with the season. This allows Marblehead Salt to deliver an exquisite live-taste quality and delicate crystalline structure that melts right on contact.  Just like Theo, our salt is "fluffy."
Marblehead Salt also donates 100% of all net profits to charity.  We do this to underwrite the administrative costs of our select charities so our donor's dollars stretch farther.  So thank you for helping me be a man for others.
