Each water harvest requires we row out to find the best salt blooms off the coast of Marblehead.

Our salt is made according to a 1,600-year-old process perfected by monks of Mount Athos, yet prepared using local sea water from the Marblehead coast North of Boston.

We are one of the few salterns on the East Coast of the United States and the only one that uses ancient, monastic saltern methods.

Unlike mass produced salts, ours benefit from a seasonality and vintage that can only occur with small batch salts. Autumn, winter, spring and summer salts are unique in that they have distinct algal, current and saline bloom signatures.

We can also vary the minerality and the salinity within a certain tolerance for our more demanding customers providing a bespoke saline experience.

You may also notice the live taste quality and delicate crystalline structure of our fresh salt that melts right on contact. Because of the freshness of our salt, you can also use less of it which makes it perfect for those looking to cut down on their salt consumption.

100% Philanthropy

Salt delights and preserves.  It binds people together by allowing us good things to eat.  So we think it only makes sense that the money our salt gives us be used for good for others.

The Salt of the Earth

For many thousands of years, sea salt has been used to enhance flavors in our foods and delight our palates.  Job once reproached his friend, "Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt?"  Of course not!  Salt gives us zest and joy.

But salt isn't solely about living well.  The Book of Leviticus states, "You shall not omit from your grain offerings the salt of the covenant with your God; with all your offerings you shall offer salt."  So according to some, salt also means living in relation to another, it means the preservation of a commitment and a covenant.  This mirrors the use of sea salt used through the centuries to ensure food would be preserved and in turn preserve others through drought and famine.

What does all this mean for Marblehead Salt Co.?

It means that making salt is about fun and good food, but also about doing good.

Our mission is to help improve the world around us.  First, by crafting world-class artisanal salts, produced in accordance with ancient standards and delivered with extraordinary customer service.  Second, and equally important, we seek to improve our communities and our world through active corporate philanthropy.
